COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course aims to advance the knowledge and skills of healthcare practitioners so that they may provide evidence-based medicine to manage the special needs of the geriatric population, as well as develop a more satisfying practitioner-patient relationship.



COURSE
OUTCOMES: At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Perform a comprehensive geriatric assessment based on current and updated knowledge and skills in the discipline;
  2. Understand psychosocial aspects in the continuum of geriatric care spanning domiciliary to institutional settings;
  3. Apply an inter-disciplinary approach in the preventive, curative and rehabilitative geriatric health services.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE COURSE
The course is aimed at doctors, interns, general practitioners, family physicians, physiotherapists and nurses

COURSE CONTENT

Basic Geriatrics Clinical Geriatrics

- Introduction to geriatric health
- Aging process
-Psychosocial aspects of geriatric care in
health and disease

-Overview of organ-system disorders in geriatric population including oral
health and mental health.
-Clinical presentation, investigations, pharmacotherapy, other therapies
and complications of common clinical conditions in geriatric population
-Comprehensive geriatric assessment
-Rehabilitation in geriatrics-domiciliary to institutional
-Chronic and terminal illness in older adults
- Principles of end-of-life care

COURSE METHODOLOGY
  • The course content will be presented through interactive lectures and seminars, online tutorials and assignments, case studies, group work, role plays, workshops, practical classes in clinical skill lab and visits to hospitals and old age home.

Continuing Education Units
The course has been accredited for four continuing education (CE) units awarded by the University. Although these CE units cannot be transferred to satisfy credit requirements in any diploma or degree level courses in which the candidates may enroll at a future date, they could be counted in advancement of career by the relevant institutions.
