COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this course is to introduce participants to the broad spectrum of counseling with educational counselling as its main focus. Instruction and opportunities for practice will be provided in fundamental skills of counseling with emphasis on family dynamics. Contribution of other factors such as wholesome nutrition, avoidance of substance abuse and awareness of a healthy sexual demeanor among the adolescent age group towards school success will be highlighted. E-addiction with its growing misuse among school children causing an untoward effect on the school performance and methods to safeguard children and teach parents regarding promotive behavior to benefit from technology will be introduced.
COURSE OUTCOMES
At the end of this course participant should be able to :
- Define counseling in different settings
- Explain the interrelationship of factors that would influence academic performance.
- Be familiar with the learning process and describe the different styles of learning.
- Describe the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence education.
- Be aware of the interactions between educational achievement and behavioral problems, special abilities, health and adolescent development, personality, motivation, creativity and problem solving, attitude and aptitude, and technology.
- Explain the contributory role of a wholesome diet in educational achievement.
- Identify learners in the school environment who may be prone to or are subject to substance abuse and counsel them and their parents explaining its harmful effects.
- Describe the importance of a healthy sexual demeanor for the adolescent learner and explain how to cope with the natural bodily changes that occur.
- Explain methods to make optimum use of technology in education without being addicted to it.
- Be familiar with the latest knowledge on e-addiction and share it with peers and students as appropriate.
- Apply the basic counseling process in the management of academic problems.
- Identify academic problems in the adolescent and refer those affected for appropriate management.
- Communicate effectively with family members and the relevant school personnel.
- Demonstrate respect for the client's values, beliefs and opinions.
- Apply ethical standards and professional values as they relate to the practice of counseling.
- Utilize the strengths and accept the weaknesses of the clients in the performance of duties as an educational counselor.
Counselors employed in an educational setting, allied health science practitioners, marketing individuals in education and parents who wish to enter a career in academics.

Continuing Education units
The course has been accredited for two continuing education (CE) units awarded by the University. Although these CE units cannot be transferred to satisfy credit requirements in any diploma or degree level courses in which the candidates may enroll at a future date, they could be counted in advancement of career by the relevant institutions.
