COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course work is designed for students to conduct to an investigation into the role nutrition plays in sports and human achievement and the determination of optimum hydration and nutrient intake in relation to athletic activity.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
- describe the dominant energy system functioning in an athletic event and the energy source.
- identify when and what nutrients to eat before, during and after exercise.
- describe the food pyramid and its ability to meet athletic needs.
- summarize the role of fat, carbohydrate and protein in growth, development, and exercise including the chemical pathways that generate energy for muscle action
- describe specific nutritional terms and their relationship to athletic performance
- plan a diet including exercise appropriate to meet the needs of a individuals in various life stages utilizing a computerized nutrition analysis program
- identify the essential nutrients and describe their effect on energy balance within the body.
- explain the synergistic action between proper nutrition, physical activity and athletic performance
- evaluate ethical and health implications as they relate to nutritional intake and athletic performance.
- evaluate current nutritional information and misinformation.
- evaluate the use of ergogenic aids in sports.
- describe the role of the endocrine and central nervous system on physiological function and the influences of nutrition and exercise on regulation
- examine the psychological role that supplements play in athletic performance.
- examine the psychological aspect of perceived body image and athletic performance.
