COURSE DESCRIPTION
During this class, students will receive basic instruction in skills required in any health care setting. The students will receive an understanding of the health industry and it's various career paths, both traditional and nontraditional. Competency based areas include medical law and ethics, communications, medical terminology, medical math. Instruction and practice will be provided in basic skills used in most health care settings, including specific skills such as the documentation skills, computer input and retrieval skills, understanding of quality control and quality assurance, universal precautions, workplace safety and infection control. Career preparation skills will include career search as well as finding the "right" career, job seeking skills, keeping a job, professionalism, stress management and time management.


COURSE OUTCOMES : At the end of this course student should be able to

  1. Demonstrate how personal skill development; including positive attitude, honesty, self-confidence, and time management affect employability.
  2. Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills, including group dynamics, conflict resolution and collaboration.
  3. Demonstrate how good academic skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills are important in the workplace.
  4. Demonstrate workplace safety and infection control of the medical settings.
  5. Demonstrate career paths and strategies for obtaining and maintaining employment.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to adapt to changing technology in personal and professional settings.


WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE COURSE

High school graduates who wish to take up employment in the health sector in clinical settings including, hospitals, medical centers, doctor's offices.

Employed personnel in the health sector who wish to pursue formal/higher education in the allied health sciences.

Continuing Education Units
The course has been accredited for nine continuing education (CE) units awarded by the University. Although these CE units cannot be transferred to satisfy credit requirements in any diploma or degree level courses in which the candidates may enroll at a future date, they could be counted in advancement of career by the relevant institutions.
