COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides an opportunity to health care professionals who encounter ECG monitoring and traces to update and enhance their generic skills in ECG and rhythm interpretation. The course covers the basic concepts of relation of each segment of the ECG trace to the cardiac cycle as well as the interpretation of ECG and rhythm in the most classical and basic cardiac anomalies like angina, MI etc., by building on knowledge of pathophysiology, assessment, examination, treatment and care.

COURSE OUTCOMES:
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the essential technical aspects of ECG recording.
  2. Explain the normal standardization of the ECG and recognize correct- /incorrect standardization of the ECG trace
  3. Describe the specific waves in an ECG trace in terms of Polarity, Amplitude and Duration.
  4. Calculate the cardiac axis, identify axis deviation and recognize the impact of axis deviation on the clinical ECG.
  5. Interpret the ECG in the setting of Acute Coronary Syndrome(Acute MI and Angina Pectoris)
  6. Identify and differentiate between normal and abnormal Rhythms.
  7. Recognize the significance and types of Arrhythmias (Tachyarrhythmia / Brady arrhythmia) on ECG traces encountered in daily clinical practice.
  8. Identify the common ECGs provided of patients having miscellaneous conditions e.g. electrolyte imbalance, congenital heart disease, heart muscle disease and metabolic disorders.
